Color Confidential: Be Jeweled

Color Confidential

In case you couldn't tell from my make-shift "Color Confidential" header, this edition does not feature a specific Design Seeds color palette like the first one I did {almost a full month ago... yikes!}.  I actually came up with this one all on my own, which I'm super excited about.  So, if you've seen a Design Seeds color palette like this one, please don't burst my bubble by telling me.  Deal?

Why create my own palette?  Glad you asked.  Many of you already know that my husband and I have very different tastes when it comes to decor.  In other words, we disagree on just about everything.  He likes neutrals.  I like color.  He likes darker shades.  I prefer more saturated and vibrant hues.  You get the idea.

Well, I've been on a quest to find a color scheme/decorating plan that will work for us both.  The very first attempt looked like this:

His and Hers

He appreciated the black/grays and rustic touches, while I loved the pops of yellow and graphic patterns on the throw pillows.  But, I wanted to play around with adding a bit more color.  So, I put together a mood board that became this edition of "Color Confidential".

Just for fun, based on the header, can you guess what inspired me?

That's right, ladies and gentleman: JEWEL TONES!  Why?  Well, here's my logic: jewel tones are colors that are saturated instead of bright, like, say, this...

The only thing I'd change is the wall color (light or medium gray).

As much as my man loves me, I know him well enough to know that he wouldn't be able to deal with walking into a home decorated with these bright colors.  No offense to those of you who choose to decorate this way.  In fact, I don't mind this look myself.  I'm just sharing what I know my hubby doesn't like.

With jewel tones as my inspiration, I set about to create something that we could both live with:

Jewel Tones

Why he likes it: there is plenty of darker colors going on.  The walls are a medium gray.  The sofa isn't white.

Why I like it: plenty of color.  The walls and sofa are darker than I would normally choose, but I can live with them.  {Note: kiddos + dark sofa = a good thing; living room gets plenty of light during the day and can handle a darker color, which makes the room cozier at night.}  I still get to use white here and there {side tables and frames}.

Plus, just by switching out a couple of pillows, I can change the overall feel of the space:

So, what do you think?  Do you like the first or second one better?

Just for the record: I'm not sure where jewel tones stand as far as being "all the rage" and "so last season", but frankly, I don't really care.  Remember, creating a home isn't always about trends.  It's about what you and your family love.

{Note to self: get back to those house dreaming posts... people are probably tired of seeing only living room mood boards...}

Hope you all like this edition of "Color Confidential"!  Now, I want to know:
